For Nonfiction Writers

You’ve got a big idea. Let’s share it with the world! I work with nonfiction authors to translate their knowledge and experience into writing that educates, entertains, and transforms readers.

My Services

Project Dev. & Book Proposals

Do you have a great idea for a book? Are you trying to build your professional platform? Is it time to expand the reach of the blog, newsletter, or articles you write for others in your professional space? I collaborate with non-fiction authors to grow the seed of an idea into an original, marketable book proposal that showcases their subject matter expertise and promises to expand the reach of their ideas.

Ghostwriting

For someone who’s never written a book or doesn’t have time to write regularly in order to meet a publisher’s deadlines, the drafting and revision process can be daunting. I can help structure a book, write it, and implement feedback from agents and publishers on the pathway to publication. Although each of these collaborative processes is unique, my approach is author first so that your book is a true reflection of your knowledge, ideas, and voice.

Editorial Services

After all the time and effort you’ve put into writing your book, you want to make sure you’re submitting the best possible manuscript you can. During the process of revision, I partner with you to offer feedback and ideas, to implement other editorial feedback, to improve your writing, and to capture your authentic voice on the page. I am also available for final copyediting and proofreading.

The Process

Writing a book is simple, but not easy. No project is exactly the same, but together we can make it happen!

HIGHLIGHTED PROJECT

No Hard Feelings

by Liz Fosslien & Mollie West Duffy

“We consider Julie our magical fairy godmother. We first worked with her to develop and edit our book proposal. She understood exactly what we needed and helped shape the overall narrative of the book, worked with us to create a table of contents and structure, and then helped us refine the text. She took the time to speak with each of us individually to ensure that she understood our combined and separate voice and tone so that she could bring out the best in us. Any author would be lucky to work with Julie!”

FAQ

  • A great idea (and a great title!) is important. But it’s just as important that you have story, substance, and methodology to back it up. That’s where I come in. Together, we can realize the promise of your idea and turn it into a set of principles and practices that readers can use in their own lives.

  • Of course! Writing a book is much more of a group project than a solo one. My approach is collaborative, not competitive, and I’m happy to jump in at any stage of the process and work together with others to create a book that you’re proud of.

  • Absolutely! Not every book is suitable for traditional publication. I’ve worked on full length (60K) nonfiction projects that were self-published, but I’m particularly interested in short (15-20K) nonfiction on a very narrow topic. Please reach out to me if you want to talk more about self-publishing and the strategy that works best for your project and audience.

  • One of the most important parts of my job is to get to know you so that I can write and work in your voice. I accomplish that through conversation, research, and listening to and watching every piece of video and audio content you’ve put out there. After that, I’m able to impersonate most authors…at least on the page!

  • I occasionally write newsletters, blog, Tweet, and post on behalf of others, but it’s generally as part of ongoing projects and/or in service of searching for a big idea.

That said, I am open to discussing this kind of work, and it’s a critical component of selling and marketing any book or course.
